Youth and Young Adult Conferences

A Catholic college student started the Society of St. Vincent de Paul more 170 years ago, responding to a challenge from a fellow student: "Show me your works." These words resonated in this young man's mind and he gathered students and friends to serve the poorest of the poor in the slums of Paris.

On his twentieth birthday, Frederic Ozanam and his friends founded the Society and named it after St. Vincent de Paul, taking his love as their own and following Vincent's spirituality of love of the poor, service, and advocacy for social justice.

Young people at schools, universities and Catholic church parishes belong to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul through chapters known as conferences throughout the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, including UCLA and Loyola Marymount University.

Currently, members of youth and young adult conferences are able to participate in many activities and endeavors:

  • Volunteering at our shelter on Skid Row, St. Vincent's Cardinal Manning Center, including participating in overnight and weekend "urban plunge" experiences
  • Learning leadership skills while working with the senior counseling staff and looking after inner-city and low-income children during the summer at the Circle V Ranch Camp, as part of the Camper-In-Leadership-Training (CILT) program;
  • Taking part in our annual Youth/Young Adult Work-Retreat at the Circle V Ranch, our summer camp in the Santa Barbara Mountains
  • And other projects that come up periodically. The level of involvement is up you, or the youth and young adults with whom you work

In addition to the above opportunities, many of our youth and young adults initiate service projects in their own communities with the support of the Society such as: food drives for food pantries, meals for the homeless, visiting senior citizen homes, collecting and distributing socks, blankets and sweaters for the homeless, among other activities.
